Phoronix: Next Month We Might Hear About Unigine's New Linux Tech Demo

For years Unigine has been producing some of the best Linux (and Windows) tech demos / benchmarks. Going back to the days when there were few quality games on Linux, they were doing terrific OpenGL tests and stressing Linux GPUs/drivers like crazy. Fortunately, they're going to be working out another test soon...

Phoronix, Linux Hardware Reviews, Linux hardware benchmarks, Linux server benchmarks, Linux benchmarking, Desktop Linux, Linux performance, Open Source graphics, Linux How To, Ubuntu benchmarks, Ubuntu hardware, Phoronix Test Suite

Not a fan of oilrush, but I like Cradle a lot :O Its a very nice game, I hope to see similar games in the future Too bad that the licensing options are not very flexible and dont cover indie dev's.

      for anyone interested
this kind of rendering is called "physically based rendering" (https://www.marmoset.co/toolbag/learn/pbr-theory)
it's not that complicated but it is kind of demanding (it's actually much simpler then some rendering techniques used today)

Dont like AMD cards though. Which is odd seen as Unigine's demos/benches run fine

Is that the same as what Star citizen does?

Unigine Heaven is still broken for me on latest AMD drivers though Unigine Valley/Sanctuary/Tropics run fine.

To some extent. PBR is a base model for producing realistic lighting of objects, so a brick looks and acts like a brick, and a metal pipe looks and acts like a metal pipe while a plastic pipe looks and acts like a plastic pipe. All of this using basically the same math/shader for all of them. It can even produce realistic skin with a few extra maps.

But all of this power is then handed to an artist, and they tweak it to look like they want, so the end result isn't really PBR even though it is PBR based. So Star Citizen does things that makes being out in space look good, rather than realistically, such as looking at a star that is two bright would burn out your retina.

                yes
and the next unreal engine has a shader for it, and the cry engine and frostbite and everybody (someone made a shader for blender)
it's the latest fad, despite being really old

the other half of proper PBS is lighting
it's easy to do "good enough" but really hard to do more realistic
(all this together is somewhat close to raytracing)

Some devs are using it for years already...
