  • Unreal Engine 3 works on Linux via Stage3D

    Today I've read news about Adobe Flash 11.4 and get an idea to test how Pepper Flash plugin works on Linux.
    Last time I tested 11.2 release and it's was completely unusual, because hardware acceleration was disabled by Adobe.
    Here is topic about that on phoronix: No OpenGL for Flash Stage3D on Linux.

    But today I checked latest version of Google Chrome and find that situation is completely changed.
    From Stage3D now disabled in plugin, but only disabled in Google Chrome configuration by default.

    My configuration is: Ubuntu 12.04 32-bit, AMD HD6950 1GB, FGLRX driver, Google Chrome 21.0.1180.81 with flash player 11.3.31.230.

    Try this:
    1. Install latest Google Chrome
    2. Run it with "--ignore-gpu-blacklist" flag
    3. Open chrome://gpu-internals/ and check Stage3D status
    4. Serf to http://www.unrealengine.com/flash/ or any other demo

    PS: For me it's even works on notebook with mobile Intel i3 and HD3000.
    Performance is quite low, looks like 10-15FPS, but all textures is here and all effects working like on HD6950.

    I don't see any textures.

      Worked for me with radeon on HD 6550M, but really slow for such low details (just look at the fruits in the market stands).

      Have you checked whether it needs s3tc or floating point textures or something like that?

        Yep it's a bit slow, but before Stage3D doesn't work at all.

        With 5000 cubes for me its 15 fps for webgl and 7 for Stage3D.

        Just checked, S2TC (not s3tc ) is required.

          Which version of Google Chrome and flash plugin do you have? What's about hardware?
          You need to note that Chromium hasn't required version of flash plugin, it's use 11.2 version which doesn't support hardware acceleration on Linux.

            I only can say that is S3TC not required, S2TC used here.

              Works perfectly here with GMA 4500 almost smooth fps.

              you need latest Mesa, Chrome and s3tc

                Hm, yeah, for me on Firefox it's still just foliage floating above an ocean. But at least it's good to know that much is supported by the r600g drivers.

                    It works but very slowly, pretty much slide show and I am on proprietary nvidia 295ish version.

                      still no 60 fps a sec, but we are talking much closer to 20

                        Actually, I had it wrong: I had hardware acceleration disabled. (rightclick, settings, hardware acceleration)
                        Epic Citadel works reasonably smooth with hardware acceleration enabled.

                        http://alternativaplatform.com/en/demos/maxracer/ works kind of ok. With antialiasing the performance is really jerky, altering quickly between ok and really bad, but without antialiasing it's much better and even playable. Still, FPS is not steady.

                          You could check it again (just remove s3tc from system).
                          S3TC texture compression isn't used here at all.

                            Seems to work perfect on my system currently Xubuntu 12.04, with a 280GTX. I am not sure if you can display FPS but I would say it was somewhere between 30-60 though it looks more like Unreal Engine 2 or something you would see on a mobile device.

                              Is the Pepper API aka PPAPI documented somewhere? All I find are a bunch of source files and some basic info:

                              I'd like to integrate pepper into my standalone plugin player, so some mozilla NPAPI like docs would be very welcomed...
