Shroud of the Avatar was successfully funded, but they're doing a new push for some more funding to improve the game. They have promised a Linux release at this point, but haven't said if it will be day 1. If there are more Linux backers, then that can only help. The developers interact with their backers frequently on their forums, and on regular Google Hangouts. They've been really good about integrating what the backers want.

For those who don't know, this is a spiritual successor to classic single player Ultima games, as well as Ultima Online. It is unique in its approach to selective multiplayer. You can play completely offline as a single player game with a traditional campaign. You can play online with your own hosted instance only with select friends. Or you can play in a more traditional MMO model with a persistent online world with everyone. Right now it looks like no subscription model for the online game.

For those unfamiliar with the Ultima games there is a heavy focus on immersion, story, crafting, moral quandaries, and real consequence. Also, there are no quest markers. You talk to NPCs who move about town on their own schedules and figure out the plot through actual dialogue and exploration.

I back a lot of crowd funded projects, but as someone who grew up with the Ultima series, this is the one I was most excited for. I've personally backed it to the tune of $100. I honestly wish I could have afforded to back it more.

While there are more and more Linux games every year, there are few RPGs and hardly any online RPGs. This is a great game in its own right, but also a great game that is already guaranteed to get a Linux release. Please consider supporting it.

As part of this new push to see if they raise even more money for more features (and just adding more content/depth to the game), they are doing referral rewards. If you do back the game, please consider listing me as a referrer. My email address is enderandrew@gmail.com

A fan site is also giving away prizes to new backers. See http://www.hearthofbritannia.com/ for details on their prizes.

          • This game has been in the making years before development started. It began when I looted 10gil from a random house in Final Fantasy IX, playing as Vivi. I wanted to return it after finding out it was their grandmothers life savings, unfortunately, there was no way to do this, no 'come clean' mechanic in place. I imagined what life would have been like afterwards, how the grandmother could no longer pay her mortgage, how they were evicted, begging in the streets.I wanted to explore the RPG world through the eyes of a bystander, a regular person in someone elses world.
You Are Not The Hero is a 2D Action Platform RPG that ditches the battle system to focus on richer RPG gameplay elements. Instead of playing a traditional hero that saves the world, you're instead playing a bystander swept into the affairs of the heroes and villains alike. You play as Petula, an unemployed, emotionally charged, ill-tempered, otherwise average young woman. With the royal army hot on their heels, the heroes have made their way to your village where they resume scavenging for supplies in everyone's homes. After confronting them for stealing your pendant, they rush off to continue their quest, giving you a quest of your own to retrieve it.

They were petitioned for Linux support and have just announced it (good work on listening devs!). Early days at the moment but they may need help reaching their goal.

This one is special for me, Red Baron was one of the first PC games I ever played.

                • Ninja Pizza Girl

Looks like an excellent platformer game, with a very interesting idea for gameplay based on bullying. You don't lose health or lives, you lose self-esteem.

                  Now announced with Linux support!
