Thanks to the Xiph influence, there is, just as with vorbis, a libopusfile that makes implementing decoding and playback of these files extremely simple. Unlike libvorbisfile, it can even take care of chaining for you behind you back and just deliver a continuous stream of interleaved dual channel audio.

It is great news, but it's a long, uphill battle to replace the ubiquity of mp3. The MPEG mafia will do everything it can to ensure it doesn't happen.

I think you mean MP4, aka M4A, aka AAC.

Ogg Opus is already Internet Engineering Task Force standard. MPEG mafia has yet to respond to Opus features such as Speech, VoIP, Low latency, Studio/transmitter link, wireless audio.

While MP3 is ubiquitous, AAC is nowhere near it. So Opus has good chances of catching up, especially with the push of being a mandatory codec for WebRTC.

Their efforts were actually already disrupted because of emergence of Opus which came out to be superior:

USAC (Unified speech and audio coding) is an MPEG codec speech and audio codec defined in ISO/IEC 23003-3. It is also known as the Extended High-Efficiency AAC (xHE-AAC) audio codec which is the latest member of the MPEG AAC codec family.
