Matthew Garrett's blog at http://mjg59.dreamwidth.org/ has some information on the status,

EFI Implementation Bugs (Jan 13, 2011)

Macs and Linux (May 18, 2011):

Trials and Tribulations with EFI (May 25, 2011):

A use for EFI (Jun 7, 2011) [although not about booting...]:

Booting with EFI (Jul 14, 2011):

Further Adventures in EFI Booting (Jul 26, 2011):

I don't have a uEFI platform myself, but I get the feeling that there may be a few stumbling blocks on some platforms.

The kernel can be booted directly from efi, otherwise this is a bootloader question really. With the runtime services (reboot etc) the situation is the same as bios; crappy firmware doesn't work until it's been worked around, compliant firmware works good.
