Phoronix: Say Hello To Linux 3.0; Linus Just Tagged 3.0-rc1

For anyone that was doubting Linus Torvalds would finally part ways with the Linux 2.6 kernel series, you lost your bets. On the eve of Memorial Day in the United States and his departure to Japan for LinuxCon, Linus Torvalds just tagged Linux 3.0-rc1 in Git...

No. It's a one man show and Michael usually does fairly well with typos/spelling/grammar. Anyway.. thanks for registering just to post that!

when i read : "On the eve of Memorial Day in the United States and his departure to Japan for LinuxCon, Linus Torvalds just tagged Linux 3.0-rc1 in Git..."
i feel i am reading about the " english queen mum "
may be this dude is too much keeping himself under the lights just like bill gates .
by the way that looks marketing and does not show any change in the philosophy of linux .

still being the one that leads linux and the whole world of FREE software is getting more and more presumptuous for my eyes , very selfish too , as much as b.gates is .

the 2.4 or 2.6 are very differents while 3.0 is inline with 2.6 . it s like nvidia and its cards before gtx4 , renaming old gt8xxx to gt9xxx then gt2xx . its called marketing making the buzz with a new name on old products to revive the sells .
of course linux should need to increase them . it is not same success-story as firefox .....linus like all americans wants one too , "normal"

It's worth reading the whole discussion on lkml. There was quite a discussion about it, and Linus just made a choice. Someone had to, or else nothing would get done. It's not about marketing.

Also there have been 40 major releases of the 2.6 kernel, I think you forgot to count 2.6.0

                        |0...39| = 40

                        EDIT: my mistake :P

urgh, your english feels like it was "babel fished", but I guess what you mean that he makes statements solely to keep himself in the limelight and that he is being selfish and presumptuous. Right?

How else is he going to communicate with globally distributed developers? Also as the head of a project on would expect him to make these kinds of decisions. Note that I don't believe Bill Gates wantonly publicised himself just for fame...

It is as he said, he just got bored with the current versioning system and wanted to take the opportunity to fix it. It means nothing, and isn't meant to publicise some grand meaning or development either.

                            How this compares to this:

So what are the big changes?

NOTHING. Absolutely nothing. Sure, we have the usual two thirds driver changes, and a lot of random fixes, but the point is that 3.0 is *just* about renumbering, we are very much *not* doing a KDE-4 or a Gnome-3 here. No breakage, no special scary new features, nothing at all like that. We've been doing time-based releases for many years now, this is in no way about features. If you want an excuse for the renumbering, you really should look at the time-based one ("20 years") instead.
It's just practical decision. 2.6.40 simply sucked.

i'd love marketing campaigns around that release:

"Linux 3.0 NEW but the same"

                              or

"_distro name_ powered by Linux 3.0"

i think we have to admit it sounds cool
