Phoronix: MATE 1.8 Is Looking To Come To Fedora 20

Besides GNOME 3.12 being worked on for Fedora 20, it looks like MATE 1.8 will also end up landing as a stable release update...

    Why not use gnome-flashback

Why not use gnome-flashback? It seems to work better than ever in the latest iteration. Less buggy than Mate.

Can anybody tell, how well Mate works on high pixel-densities?

How old is the underlying GTK2 that MATE relies on?

In Fedora 20 and Rawhide it uses GTK+ 2.24.22, released last autumn. There is still some maintenance activity in the gtk-2-24 git branch, so you might expect new minor releases in the future.

I wouldn't expect any support before MATE is ported to GTK+ 3. I might be wrong though, as I don't follow MATE development beside what Michael covers here.

I'm so happy they are still developing MATE.

I've tried gnome shell, "classic", and cinnamon, and MATE by far works best for me.

It seems far buggier to me (GNOME-Panel crashes regularly), it's GTK3 only, it's much bigger in size.

After struggling with Gnome3 for a few months, trying KDE and LXDE I migrated to XFCE a year or two ago. Yesterday I've installed MATE. It feels so much better. XFCE is also good, but I was missing some features. Looking forward to have the latest MATE version in Fedora.

I've been using Linux on desktop for more than 10 years. It's good that after Unity/Gnome3 craziness almost all distros include decent DE again.
