Shouldn't such a basic thing, as an image format library be like... freakin' stable, above all else? I mean if it's used in production, crashes are intolerable.

And shouldn't such a basic thing like hardware be freakin' stable? Yet erratas are commonplace. People write software, people are fallible => software isn't perfect.

Not only that. The most important thing is that a crash usually means something overflows, overwriting memory somewhere. jpeg decoding should not lead to exploits.
Just like embedding php scripts into jpegs or gifs... (which is not a problem with jpeg, more the platform serving back that same file).

implies that those bugfixes trigger crashes and other problems.
