      Shouldn't such a basic thing, as an image format library be like... freakin' stable, above all else? I mean if it's used in production, crashes are intolerable.

        And shouldn't such a basic thing like hardware be freakin' stable? Yet erratas are commonplace. People write software, people are fallible => software isn't perfect.

          Not only that. The most important thing is that a crash usually means something overflows, overwriting memory somewhere. jpeg decoding should not lead to exploits.
          Just like embedding php scripts into jpegs or gifs... (which is not a problem with jpeg, more the platform serving back that same file).

              He's probably referring to the poor grammar of that quoted sentence.

              "features at least five known bug fixes resulting in crashes and other problems."

              implies that those bugfixes trigger crashes and other problems.

                Yeah kinda "woosh", but you never know with the cynical regulars around here. Perhaps that fact is just as sad.
