    Yes this is great news, come next Beta it's time to install Haiku on bare metal instead of running in a VM. Good times ahead.

          Red Hat, Debian, Arch, Ports, ebuild. Just to name a few that I am pretty sure are flexible enough to work out.

              A proven format, colaboration, people know how to author them, others needs less infrastructure to support it.

                Yes, they've designed it from scratch since their own implementation would be under a permissive license and of a design that the developers can agree with.
                It also forms part of the upgrade framework of Haiku, so there would have to be OS specific code for that function.
