Phoronix: KMSCON Is Getting Ready To Kick The Kernel Console

KMSCON is turning out to be a successful and interesting project with high ambitions of being the leading terminal emulator for Linux while running from user-space...

Does KMSCON removes or replaces code in the kernel???? ie will it be merged in the kernel when ready?

Will this merely make a Linux system into merely a smart terminal for say a mainframe or even a Unix/Linux host or is simply a userspace console replacement?

        Background

It should get the GNOME background from gsettings:
        $ gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri
        'file:///home/alice/Firefox_wallpaper.png'

Then it can have the same background on the terminal as on the GNOME desktop.
Though, the background could get darken for the text to be more readable.

Is the dependency on GTK or GNOME or what it was for Unicode gone?

How much of VT-xxx does it support yet?

Does it support the usage of a background wallpaper image? In PNG format?

David also wrote the kernel hid wiimote driver, the bluez wiimote plugin, a userspace library for handling the wiimote evdev events, and xf86-input wiimote driver. Thanks David!

Now if he could write one that uses an Android phone as a wiimote, car steering wheel and a joystick that would be awesome.
It would need an Android app too. But would be pretty cool. Not sure if Android devices are good enough for that though.

sounds like an exact thing i wanted since i heard about KMS ^_^
design looks decent also, unlike Lennart's stuff.

hope we'll see mplayer and others properly utilising KMS console instead of fbdev in near future

What The Fuck ? it's a system's terminal in userspace, why it would be even trying to integrate with any DE ?!

Any input on how to use this? How do I replace the default kernel's console?

                    !
If his stuff are crap why its his code that is used the most and not the code of people that know better.

                      Blazing Fast

I just timed the time it took to display dmesg on Ubuntu 12.04 and kmscon is blazing fast even without DRM enabled:

                      kernel VT: 1.476 seconds
                      kmscon: 0.188 seconds

Thanks for bringing this project to our attention, Michael. I hope to see this integrated in distros once it gets a bit more testing under its belt.

Without the overhead of X and the DE environment. Would be cool if games could be played that way too, as long as the console's configured properly. Maybe if some games required X, some dummy X server could be implemented

So when I am on GNOME in VT7, then I press Ctrl+Alt+F1 and switch to VT1, then I will have the same background.

It would likely be much better to have a command to set the background and then a login script that queried gsettings and called said command. Integration is nifty and all, but this is not quite the appropriate place for it.
