Phoronix: Mesa Lands Support Improvements For Haiku

For users of Haiku, the open-source BeOS-inspired platform, there's now better mainline support for the operating system with the open-source Mesa graphics drivers...

This is an incremental update... that was prompted by packaging..its nothing more than shuffling around who does what.

It is needed yes but doesn't add any hardware drivers... which is the only thing I'm interested in seeing at this point.

Not necessarily, Haiku is in the position of being an open source media production OS due to its design and low latency kernel.
A developer has recently started work on writing JACK2 bindings for MediaKit, Haiku's native audio transport solution, so that other open source programs could be ported over more easily, and there has been talk about adding FFADO support.

I would say due to its design, and stop here: Linux is probably an even better "low latency kernel" now that it has a real time patch, but this doesn't mean that the OSs based on Linux are better as the integration and the higher level stack aren't very good..
