The control panel is the game that wants to use it

And what if I want to force AF for compiz cube, like I'm doing right now with fglrx ? Or what if the game does not have an option for anisotropic filtering ?

Not having a proper control panel is just a bad idea (imho).

Yet, somehow I didn't find it odd when R300/R600 split happened.
Because it was just about implementing stuff that wasn't available for R300's.

I thought that the control panel was "driconf"?

I don't know if this particular option is in there, but that's what Mesa drivers use.

Hmm, looks like the patch is only for the older chips, i.e., pre-Evergreen. But nice to have anyway.

Now it also works for Evergreen. Jerome Glisse just committed it to Git:

                http://cgit.freedesktop.org/mesa/mes...093fe1dfbd1200

And the commit for older GPUs:

Great. I just tried it with Unigine Heaven, and it works. Cool

What are you talking about? AF is supported since r100.
