I though it did. How do you get DRI2 without KMS then? Anyway, another reason to use KMS is that without it you loose like 90% of your advanced OpenGL functionality in the drivers; not bad if you don't use the drivers for 3D stuff though.

Maybe not explicitly, but KMS is required for DRI2 on Radeons.

        Oh yes, it does.

No. The radeon developers chose to only support it with KMS, though. In general, KMS is not a requirement to make DRI2 work.

This thread is titled "Radeon KMS Gets Faster X-Video Support" so it is assumed that we are talking about the radeon driver in the first place.

Performance seems to be much worse with r7xx class hardware:

The movie playback tests aren't running on my setup for some reason, so I can't compare if Xv playback is any different between KMS and UMS; but I somehow doubt that it's any different though, at least not in a noticeable way.

The point was not to make Xv be faster with KMS than UMS, but to rather improve the current KMS situation. UMS is still the only practical choice right now.

The patch says the reason it is needed is because uploading the screen into video memory isn't accelerated yet. It sounds like there's a lot of stuff that still needs to be done before KMS can be considered "done".
