Phoronix: NVIDIA Performance: Windows 7 vs. Ubuntu Linux 12.10

With a largely shared driver code-base across platforms, the binary graphics drivers offered by AMD and NVIDIA perform at roughly the same speed for OpenGL between Linux and Windows; that's traditionally been the case and what Phoronix benchmarks in prior years have shown for NVIDIA and AMD. However, the OpenGL performance difference between operating systems is beginning to widen due to compositing window managers and other factors now affecting the results to a greater extent. In this article are benchmarks of the proprietary NVIDIA graphics driver from Microsoft Windows 7 and then development snapshots of Ubuntu 12.10 with Unity and KDE desktops.

Winner ... Kubuntu .... YEAY that's what I'm using... and it's the best.

Never going back to that stinking Microsoft garbage.

Hope Canonical manages to pick up the slack a bit before release, Ubuntu's the obvious loser of this race (as is). Awesome seeing KDE do so well compared to Win7. I use, and love, Gnome-Shell (Arch Linux), but I've heard (and seen) good things about Linux Mint/Cinnamon. With Ubuntu's stats behind, I think Mint is the OS I'll recommend to people from now on.

You'd have to conclude that Microsoft is held back due to DRM/Bus. Even as a user front end, Users are constantly waiting for dialogue boxes to pop up and applications to run or patches to check before installing, due to DRM firewalling on the operating system and its interaction with the bus. It's a nightmare to use Windows. JUST SO SLOW and AWFUL.

Then you have the moral angle due to Bill Gate and his eugenics works and Windows being a platform to spy on Users.

Maybe Win8 would have been a better pick? It's supposed to bring some improvements to the table, hough I doubt it will affect gaming much, if at all.

Thank you for adding Kubuntu into the mix and not testing just Ubuntu. It greatly increases the value of this benckmark.

Windows 8 performs worse than Windows 7 from what I have seen in benchmarks.

On the bottom are some screenshots of 20 games with respective Win7 und Win8 average Framerate.

Test System was : CPU: Core i5-750 GPU: Geforce GTX 560/1G, 4 GByte RAM Driver Windows 7 Geforce 301.42 Driver Windows 8: Geforce 302.82

                      Interesting

Good, on multiple cards as well.
I'd still be interested to see the effect of "Undirect fulscreen windows" on compiz though.

gnome ain't dead, the pile of fail that is unity is dead.

hey man why not test the fastest DE out there, lxde? lubuntu instead of kubuntu

hell even xubuntu would do. gnome and kde are the slowest ones.

THIS ---------> "Where the frack is Doom3 test? "

Doom3 is the most relevant app out there that you can use natively both in windows and linux... who cares about xonotblabla

I have got some basic problems with the GT220 heaven results. The card has got no OpenGL 4 support that means the 2 others might have used tesselation or was tesselation always off? Like when you would compare a GTX 275/285 vs. GTX 460 then it is possible that you get higher fps on heaven, but you get a different visual. Maybe add 2 profiles, one with and one without tesselation and check in the output IF it was enabled and when not mark the results to ignore.

if i remember good previous benchmarks on that topic proven KDE can run opengl ap's as fast as a lightweight DE
only difference is that KDE uses more RAM, and i doubt any of the ap's in the tests here benefit from 200MB extra ram on 8gig (i know xonotic dosent)
