  • fglrx on Fedora 20

    Has anyone managed to get fglrx working on Fedora 20? If so, what did you do? I just upgraded to F20 (kernel 3.11) from F19 using Fedup, and reinstalled the AMD driver. As soon as xserver starts, it crashes everytime. After reinstalling fglrx, now it shows an error message ("oops, gnome-shell has crashed ..."), and drops me back to terminal.

    I suspect it is some permissions problem again, but I am not sure. Can someone test a fedora 20 installation with fglrx and confirm?

    I installed the Fedora 20 XFCE spin the other night, and was able to get the most recent beta 13.11 to work. I haven't put 13.12 on yet. I've also switched to Mate+Compiz and beside horrible performance in Dota 2 with Compiz running everything works great.

    Whats the version of FGLRX?

      The problem is the wayland support on some packages, so you must recompile them with that support disabled as shown here. I have compiled them and uploaded here.

        Fedora 20 - Kernel 3.11.10-301 - KDE 4.11.3 - Catalyst 13.12

        Hi everyone
        I installed the Catalyst 13.12 from amd.com and replace its files with the one in https://github.com/kolasa/fglrx-13.251 and it worked with no problem till now. (I use KDE on Fedora 20 with kernel 3.11.10-301)

        1- Download the driver
        2- Execute it
        3- After reaching the first dialog of the installer overwrite files extracted from the installer "../install/lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod/" with the files from the above link.
        4- Continue the installer
        5- Reboot

            GNOME Only

            It crashes because the GNOME 3.10 shipped with Fedora 20 enables experimental Wayland/EGL support.

            It doesn't work well with Catalyst driver at this moment.

              So I borrowed an old NVidia GPU from a friend to test how NVidia drivers are. This is a very old GPU (4 years old?) and a much cheaper one. Wow! nvidia drivers on the old card gives me better FPS on flightgear than fglrx on my 5770!! WTH?! Additionally, firefox scrolling seems to be very smooth. I always assumed that the lag I got while scrolling is because of the images loading - but no it doesnt lag at all! I wonder why.

              Either way, I couldnt get fglrx to work with fedora 20. There is also a new kernel-3.12 update out today - so I am using that with the opensource driver now. I hope fglrx supports EGL soon, or else we will all be stuck with Fedora 19 (or 20, if it works) since Fedora 21 onwards would be based on Wayland. Every other distro will update as well, so fglrx needs to improve, and fast.

                The 5770 is supported by the open r600g drivers. and r600g is known to be almost at performance parity with Catalyst (about 70 - 80%). So there is no reason to need Catalyst for your card at all.

                If it were a Southern Islands (7XXX series) or Sea Islands (8xxx series) then using Catalyst makes sense. But not for the Evergreen series.

                  Don't worry , fglrx will improve soon. It will drop support for your card. So it could be wise, you actually read at least wikipedia entry on radeon driver and compare its performance from benchmarks here. It scores 80-110% of catalyst paared with working DPM and video acceleration, so why bother?

                      If it were a Southern Islands (7XXX series) or Sea Islands (8xxx series) then using Catalyst makes sense. But not for the Evergreen series.
                      Two reasons:

                      1. The DPM fails to switch when you have dual monitors hooked up to the card. So, my fan runs at full speed and sounds like a tank, and the card gets hot.

                      2. I do not believe that r600g is at 80% performance parity with catalyst. The proprietery drivers gives 50 FPS constantly on flightgear and the r600g driver gives 10-30FPS. When I work on some 3D modeling software inside virtualbox, it lags. It lags in games inside virtualbox. Lag lag lag lag I am tired of this lag.

                      However, that is not even the main point. The old nvidia card gives me 30-40 FPS - so if Radeon's performance is this poor, then AMD should be concerned. The nvidia card does not lag all when I am using gnome shell, or for firefox scrolling or anything else actually. It is very very smooth.

                      It scores 80-110% of catalyst paared with working DPM and video acceleration, so why bother?
                      As I said, DPM doesnt work at all if you have GDD5 memory and use dual head. It is always stuck on power level 2.

                        I agree that since RPMFusion stopped supporting akmod-catalyst it's now a lot harder to install FGLRX.
                        After a while of looking into it I found a solution:

                        A. Open a terminal

                        B. Type in:
                        $ yum install --skip-broken gcc make git kernel-devel mesa-libGL.i686 dkms patch rpm-build rpmdevtools steam glibc.i686 arts.i686 audiofile.i686 bzip2-libs.i686 cairo.i686 cyrus-sasl-lib.i686 dbus-libs.i686 directfb.i686 esound-libs.i686 fltk.i686 freeglut.i686 gtk2.i686 hal-libs.i686 imlib.i686 lcms-libs.i686 lesstif.i686 libacl.i686 libao.i686 libattr.i686 libcap.i686 libdrm.i686 libexif.i686 libgnomecanvas.i686 libICE.i686 libieee1284.i686 libsigc++20.i686 libSM.i686 libtool-ltdl.i686 libusb.i686 libwmf.i686 libwmf-lite.i686 libX11.i686 libXau.i686 libXaw.i686 libXcomposite.i686 libXdamage.i686 libXdmcp.i686 libXext.i686 libXfixes.i686 libxkbfile.i686 libxml2.i686 libXmu.i686 libXp.i686 libXpm.i686 libXScrnSaver.i686 libxslt.i686 libXt.i686 libXtst.i686 libXv.i686 libXxf86vm.i686 lzo.i686 mesa-libGL.i686 mesa-libGLU.i686 nas-libs.i686 nss_ldap.i686 cdk.i686 openldap.i686 pam.i686 popt.i686 pulseaudio-libs.i686 sane-backends-libs-gphoto2.i686 sane-backends-libs.i686 SDL.i686 svgalib.i686 unixODBC.i686 zlib.i686 compat-expat1.i686 compat-libstdc++-33.i686 openal-soft.i686 alsa-oss-libs.i686 redhat-lsb.i686 alsa-plugins-pulseaudio.i686 alsa-plugins-oss.i686 alsa-lib.i686 nspluginwrapper.i686 libXv.i686 libXScrnSaver.i686 qt.i686 qt-x11.i686 pulseaudio-libs.i686 pulseaudio-libs-glib2.i686 alsa-plugins-pulseaudio.i686 qt zlib fontconfig freetype libstdc++ libgcc fakeroot

                        C. Don't worry about all these packages, they're just 32bit libraries and some useful compilers to install the driver, just in case .

                        D. Reboot, and after that download the AMD driver, MAKE SURE it's the 13.11BETA, as 13.12 WONT WORK on the latest kernels. And make sure to save the file to the downloads folder and unzip it.

                        E. Open a terminal again.

                        F. Type in the following commands:
                        $ su
                        type in ROOT password
                        $ cd Downloads
                        $ chmod 770 amd*
                        $ ./amd*

                        G. Follow the instructions and reboot (In case it still doesn't work, open a terminal again, type and enter your ROOT password: su -c 'amdconfig --initial'

                          I finally got it working. I thought that 13.12 will work too with the patch for making it build is applied, but apparently not. Last beta is working fine on fedora 20 gnome when using those packages rebuilt without wayland support.

                            I would like to thank everyone here for helping me make my radeon card work for the last 5 years. (I was a lurker for a long time). Finally, I couldnt take it anymore - compiling and re-compiling Gnome, Kernel, Xorg bla bla is not fun anymore, in fact I am tired of it. I want to sing a different tune now.

                            Anyways, got a GeForce 660Ti, and calling it a day. I have had enough of AMD and their ridiculous driver. I am actually so surprised that Gnome shell works flawlessly, Firefox scrolls smoothly, 4k videos play without a hiccup and everything seems so so SOOOO much smoother! The driver took like 1 minute to install (HA! A record in 5 years, fglrx took DAYS to install / fix the computer after an install). The card consumes way less power and stays at 30 C no matter what I throw at it.

                            I'm loving it! It was well worth the money.
