Phoronix: AMD Puts Out A New Catalyst Linux Graphics Driver

While we haven't yet been able to find out whether the Radeon R9 290 series Linux performance has improved, AMD released a new Catalyst Linux graphics driver on Friday...

This driver now officially supports Linux 3.12 and should work with non-Ubuntu distributions aswell. I also expect R9 290 improvements, but that is something for Michael to try.

The previous Catalyst have this funny error.

        "
        Package Maintainer(s): Alberto Milone <alberto.milone@canonical.com>
        Status: *UNVERIFIED*
        Ubuntu Packages:
        Ubuntu/gutsy
        Ubuntu/hardy
        Ubuntu/intrepid
        Ubuntu/jaunty
        Ubuntu/karmic
        Ubuntu/lucid
        Ubuntu/maverick
        Ubuntu/natty
        Ubuntu/oneiric
        Ubuntu/precise
        Ubuntu/quantal
        Ubuntu/raring
        Ubuntu/source
        "

to compile we need to use "Ubuntu/source"instead "Ubuntu/saucy"..

        It's correct now?

Let me guess: X-Plane 10 still does not work? Suprise, surprise!

            They need to change to.

It does, but just for flying stealth craft. Works so well that you can't even tell the plane is there.

It's called open source radeon drivers. You should try it some time; works a lot better.

It's called nVIDIA. You should try it some time; supports a lot better

Yeah, since new DPM patches, open source drivers are in good shape for RadeonHD 234K cards. Very good power management, OGL 3.1 support (with up coming 3.3) and UVD support (UVD 2.0 cards are still not supported). That's pretty smooth for daily use and casual gaming.

By the way, weeks ago a new legacy Catalyst 13.9 driver was released for Windows 7. Windows 8 and Linux users are still stuck with 13.1

Yesterday I bought XFX R9 290, and tried both drivers (this one and previous), there is no noticeable difference in Sam3. Also, OpenGL driver build number is same in both drivers.

I tried 13.9-legacy on my test PCs win Win7, it does not changes anything, still same bugs as with 13.1-legacy.

                            test PCs with Win7*

Seems like AMD waiting for next stable driver release and then also release a legacy driver.
