Ati Radeon or Intel for HD on Linux?

  • Ati Radeon or Intel for HD on Linux?

    I would like known if is possible use hardware acceleration for full HD video 1080p using exclusively open driver.

    The Intel driver are open, the ati driver are half open, but i don't known if this functionality is present and if is good.

    Thanks.

    Note:
    In particular i like known if a graphics card (integrated on a motherboard) using these chipset could be sufficient.

    I see this old post:

      Well there is h264 accelleration for intel i3/i5 (dual) chips in experimental state. I could not test it yet however. It is very unlikely that you will get this for radeon oss.

        The Intel graphics drivers work great for displaying 720p on my Macbook. No hardware acceleration as my chipset is a GMA 950.

            Radeon. The ATI cards are MUCH more powerful. For video, the OSS driver seems to work the best, but if you enable v-sync and set your video output to OpenGL, that works too. You really don't need hardware acceleration.

              This can only do 1 HD + 1 SD stream simultaneously. More may work but not in realtime. This is true for other vendors too (AMD, NVIDIA). Though, I believe some NVIDIA chips can do 2 HD streams simultaneously in realtime.

                Now the DRI2 is supported.
                Intel chipset could be considered the best solutions for the driver open source present on linux?
                Or Ati have better feautures (even on old chipset)?

                  What do you mean, "ATi is half-open"?

                  At the moment, there is no HW decoding on Radeon hardware, but some will likely be written for the Gallium3d infrastructure. No idea when.

                        I think Intel could be a solution for user that use only integrated motharboard even if system intel cost more respect amd system.
                        While Ati, in future, could be a better solution when some project, as for example, gallium3d, became supported.

                        I speak only about open solutions.

                          Yes, Intel is the best solution Open Source wise, IMHO. BTW, I have uploaded some patches for Ubuntu/lucid to support the necessary kernel/libdrm changes for H.264 decoding:

                          I will update plain libva to 0.31.0-sds13 next.

                          I am very impressed by the work done by Intel in 6 months vs. what other people tried for 3 years... I sill haven't seen a failing clip. There is one bug though: if compiz is running, decoding performance is degraded. Intel is investigating this problem.

                            I hope you update libva soon. A prepatched kernel + libdrm would be also nice, maybe for a ppa. It's no huge problem for me to patch a kernel or libdrm, just that only others could test it more easyly. It's really sad when you don't have the hardware to try, i am pretty sure i find bugs as i usally always do Also i want of course VC1 support too.

                              I don't want to track Ubuntu/lucid kernel+libdrm+linux-libc-dev updates. Rather, it's simpler if those distributors integrate the patches. So, no debs from me.
