Recently, some notebooks with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5165 have popped up. Turns out that these are only rebranded and slightly lower clocked Mobility Radeon HD 4670, and the name was chosen to deceive stupid consumers.

Unquestionably this was done due to OEM pressure. And rebranding is very common, especially when you don't have anything new. (Hello NVidia!) But one could have hoped that AMD is now in a market position where it is not necessary to bow so low.

Hi Forum,

My problem is that the the OS does not recognise the graphics card when booting up.

Hardware - Acer Aspire 7740G laptop with 17.3" 16:9 HD display and ATI Radeon Mobility HD5470 512 MB graphics adapter.

OS - Ubuntu 9.10.

It appears that the graphics card is not correctly detected when booting up. After installing the Karmic Koala, the display was decidedly stretched and a quick check in System/Preferences/Display showed that neither the LCD display nor the graphics card were correctly 'detected'. The picture of the monitor had the word 'UNKNOWN' on it and there were only 3 screen resolutions available. Presumably the system was using some default driver.

I downloaded the ATI Catalyst Control Centre but it refused to run reporting at every start up - 'no adapter present'.

So, I downloaded the 10.1 ATI driver package (for a 5700 series display - there was none available for 5400 series) and installed that.

I then checked in System/ Admin/Hardware drivers and there was the newly installed driver. I told the system to use the new driver and, lo and behold, the screen is displaying correctly - monitor still 'UNKNOWN' but plenty of different resolutions available. However, in the lower RH corner of the display is now an AMD logo with the words 'UNSUPPORTED HARDWARE', being displayed.

This all, of course, without having run ATIconfig as it also always reports - 'no adapter present'. (Not sure, but I think it uses 'Catalyst Control Centre.)

I'm quite mystified here as the system cannot identify the (graphics) adapter yet is now running correctly albeit with the AMD 'warning'.

Admittedly the hardware is very new and I can't find a specific Linux driver for the card but I don't actually see this as a driver problem but an OS problem as the OS must identify hardware first when booting up and only then can the appropriate driver be installed.

The command 'LSPCI' in Terminal gives.........
"02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Device 68e0"

I'd be very grateful for any info / tips / suggestions on this one.

Many thanks
With state trackers emerging for the Gallium3D driver architecture to provide acceleration for a range of APIs from OpenGL ES and OpenVG to OpenGL and OpenCL, we knew it was likely that at some point there would be support for Microsoft's DirectX API. There was even a rumor of Tungsten Graphics already having a working DirectX state tracker...

Hi folks,

first I have ti admit that I'm not that god in english. So be indulgent ;-)
I have a Jetway JNC81-LF witch a radeon hd3200.
When I configured my HTPC (with this Mainboard) in my Office with a FullHD Monitor I had a Slider in amdccc which changed the value of the underscan down to zero.
But after I connected the PC with my Plasma-TV in my living-room there was no slider any more.
The Problem is no, my TV has a fixed Overscan (you can't turn it of) na dthe Underscan of the driver is overcompensating it. So I have a Black Frame around the Desktop.
So I tried several things like :

Code:

aticonfig --query-monitor Error: option --query-monitor is not supported when RandR 1.2 is enabled!

--> to get some Info

Code:

aticonfig --set-pcs-val=MCIL,DigitalHDTVDefaultUnderscan,0 Set key MCIL,DigitalHDTVDefaultUnderscan

--> No effect after restarting the X-server

Code:

aticonfig --set-dispattrib=DFP5,positionX:0 aticonfig --set-dispattrib=DFP5,positionY:0 aticonfig --set-dispattrib=DFP5,sizeX:1920 aticonfig --set-dispattrib=DFP5,sizeY:1080

--> which led to

Code:

Try to Set positionX adjust of monitor DFP5 value : 0 failed. It may not supported by monitor or the value beyond the range.
Try to Set positionY adjust of monitor DFP5 value : 0 failed. It may not supported by monitor or the value beyond the range.
Try to Set sizeX adjust of monitor DFP5 value : 1920 failed. It may not supported by monitor or the value beyond the range.
Try to Set sizeY adjust of monitor DFP5 value : 1080 failed. It may not supported by monitor or the value beyond the range.

So now I'm stuck
What can I do get this Slider back ?
Or do I have to use the radeonhd driver ?
In case yes, what should I write into Xorg.conf to bypass tho overscan of the TV.

BTW : The TV is a HDready Panasonic TH-42PV60EH

Thanks a lot

Hi, I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 with an ATI Mobility Radeon X1400. I'm using radeonhd driver on linux 2.6.32-trunk-686 (Debian Squeeze). I would like to get suggestions as to which options I should allow on xorg.conf, or where I can find information to improve the driver's performance.

Right now it's pretty crappy. It used to work really well with fglrx, but since it's not supported on newer kernels, I haven't been able to use it.

So, I decided maybe there's a way I can get radeonhd to work decently on my laptop before I install an older kernel for fglrx. I'm not looking for 3D support (not aware if it's already available on the driver), but it would be nice anyways. Full screen video playback is extremely slow, sometimes it locks for a few seconds.

Recommendations?

Phoronix: Jerome's Radeon KMS Short-Term TODO List

After the earlier X talks today and then Luc's debated Linux graphics driver stack proposal (largely between he and Eric Anholt and Daniel Stone with conflicting views, but at least Intel admitting "there's a subset of users we care about and a subset we don't"), Jerome Glisse began talking about ATI Radeon kernel mode-setting and its current state. While most that read Phoronix regularly know the direction of Radeon KMS support for the coming releases, below is Jerome's short-term TODO list for the ATI kernel support. Coming up in the Radeon DRM for the Linux 2.6.34 kernel (or releases thereafter) is support for un-mappable VRAM, support for Evergreen GPUs (Radeon HD 5000 "R800" series), use of the Linux power management API for better suspend-and-resume support, better DRM power management, HDMI audio for R700/800 graphics processors, and improved GPU lock-up recording. Other plans on the code side include better fence for improved lock-up detection, using union to separate ASIC specific data, and better message prints for multi-GPU configurations. The most common kernel mode-setting problems these days for ATI Radeon customers is coming down to mode detection issues, PLL issues on laptops with Mobility Radeon parts, ACPI/BIOS interaction problems, memory fragmentation, command submission issues, and GPU lock-ups...

Linus pushed out the Linux 2.6.33-rc7 kernel yesterday afternoon, but still even being seven release candidates into the Linux 2.6.33 kernel cycle, at least one more test release is due before we may see an official release. The number of regressions for the Linux 2.6.33 kernel is still high and is somthing that isn't pleasing Torvalds. While the Linux 2.6.33-rc7 kernel release should lower the regression count with many fixes going in since 2.6.33-rc6 last Friday, there is also some Intel and ATI Radeon DRM driver updates still being pushed into this next major release...

I'm wondering if I should wait for Lucid 10.04 or try Ubuntu 9.10?

I was just really curious what should be in the xorg.conf file in Ubuntu 9.10. If you have a Radeon RV250 / Mobility 9000, what should be in there? What features/capabilities does this card have with the open source driver (only one supported)?

I've had some settings there that allowed for some 3D but not sure what can be used.

Anyone try Karmic with a Radeon 9000?

I have been to the ThinkWiki for this card but it only offers some info but no example for a xorg.conf file. It is needed in 9.10 because the default doesn't allow 3D as it will crash or more accurately, lock up. One can't even boot up unless you use safe mode and then change the xorg.conf file if you want to use the radeon driver (since desktop effects is enabled via default).

Maybe I should use 10.04? It's currently in Alpha stage, though. I usually use Debian but wanted to experiment with Ubuntu.

I'm tired of trying out settings without some expertise advice, though. ;-)

Since being let go by Novell last year where he worked on the RadeonHD Linux graphics driver and X.Org support within SuSE Linux, Luc Verhaegen has continued work on his VIA Unichrome DDX driver as well as other X.Org code and he has also become involved with the CoreBoot project that aims to create a free software BIOS for most chipsets and motherboards on the market. Luc has worked on support for flashing the BIOS on ATI graphics cards, native VGA text mode support, and other work to help the CoreBoot project. Today at FOSDEM in Brussels, Luc Verhaegen is about to give a talk on reverse engineering a motherboard BIOS.

Hello!

I have a problem when I'm trying to upgrade to a different video card. I've upgraded my card before, so this isn't my first time.

Here's the scoop. I'm running a Dell Vostro 200 Slim, and I bought this card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814187061 . It's a low profile card, PCI-E and DVI. So I put in the card, which fits perfectly, and hooked the DVI cable to the monitor. However, when I turn on the monitor, it does not detect anything - it's just a black screen that is looking for a signal (I have it set to digital input for DVI cable, as opposed to analog for VGA). I know nothing is wrong with the cable because it works with my older card.

I then noticed that the video card box came with a small cord, which is the same as the first picture here: http://www.msicomputer.com/support/f...esoformid=2722 . I don't know what this cord does, nor can I find a place for it to connect to inside the computer.

Any help on this matter is highly appreciated. Thanks!
