Finally got around to testing out the OSS Radeon drivers. I started with the defaults in Debian Testing (Squeeze) with kernel 2.6.30 and radeon 6.12.3.1 and my Radeon HD4600.

While it did worked out of the box (mode setting, video), 3D was non-existent and 2D was rather slow.

I see there is 6.12.4 ddx driver release, but it didn't seem to express any big changes for 2D or anything for 3D.

I went back to fglrx for now, since it has been working great for me for a few releases, but wanted to know if this was me (Debian is known to be a little conservative) or things just aren't there yet.

P.S. - I had to reboot after installing fglrx, something was preventing the module from loading properly. I didn't see anything else drm related via lsmod and was also under the impression that fglrx and the OSS drm could be loaded at the same time now. While this was marginally annoying (kwin4 has more dependencies and needs more of the video stack working) it may suggest a bigger issue.

Hi all,

I'm using fedora 11 x64 with all updates on place.
I'm really pissed off because I found that my laptop hard disk is parking the heads every 10 seconds circa, and gnome-settings-daemon is trying to start pulseaudio daemon every 10 seconds circa.

This causes a deleterious parking/unparking job on the heads and raising the infamous Load_Cycle_Count HDD smart parameter. There was a famous issue with this counter (ubuntu people should remember this): manufacturers tell you that you disk is gonna die when it reaches a value between 300k-600k.

How I found the issue?
Installed atop, I saw that kjournald was invoked every 10 seconds, so I did:

Code:

> echo 1 >/proc/sys/vm/block_dump

This command enables dumping of writes on block devices that you can see invoking dmesg. So I was able to identify that gnome-settings-daemon is writing periodically to a file (pulse-shm-xxxxxx).
I got tons of lines like this:

Code:

gnome-settings-(11959): dirtied inode 188241 (pulse-shm-2392701627) on tmpfs

Nice to see, pulseaudio is back...

I killed gnome-settings-daemon and FINALLY got no periodic writes to disk.
Now I want to ask everyone, gnome devs, pulseaudio devs, and normal people, how the hell I can sort this thing out? Can I finally disable pulseaudio? I dunno why PackageKit wants to tore my system apart if I try to uninstall pulseaudio.

Bad bad bad guys, really bad.

In hopes of pushing VDPAU beyond just being a NVIDIA Unix driver technology and to make it an open standard for Linux video driver developers wishing to provide HD video acceleration on Linux via the GPU, NVIDIA released a standalone VDPAU library back in September and have been trying to push some VDPAU bits for DRI2.Today NVIDIA has updated its standalone VDPAU library, libvdpau, which is now at version 0.3. This library update supports versioning to the drivers, configurable install directory support, libvdpau_trace, and documentation updates...

Hi all !

My laptop is dead and I will have to buy a new one. But almost all laptops are using ati graphics. I have been using nvidia drivers for a long now and was really happy with what had been done with vdpau and ease of installation. So Ihave a few questions to determine if I can switch on ATI.

- I have read that XvBA what finally doing something. But is it already as efficient and easy to use as vdpau? Ismplayer supported. I mostly watch x264 1080p. Is this codec supported ?

- What about video sync and tearing. I had a desktop with ati and experienced a lot of problems of that kind. Is it fixed ?

- I am planning to keep my kubuntu with KDE4. Are 3Deffects well supported by the driver ? I remember the time where these effects where hard to get working with the ATI driver.

- And last question : what about the open-source driver ? Where is the developpement heading to and what can be achieved as of now with this driver ?

Thanks a lot for all your answers, I am anxious at the idea of leaving nvidia.

Phoronix: Intel Linux Graphics Shine With Fedora 12

Intel's Linux graphics driver stack is often at the forefront of X.Org / Mesa innovations, from Intel being the first driver having in-kernel video memory management to being the first driver with mainline kernel mode-setting support to even being the driver that often first receives support for new OpenGL extensions in Mesa. The Intel Linux driver stack can be attributed with many firsts, but continually pushing this driver while putting out quarterly timed releases has led to some pains. Earlier this year in fact the driver stack was rather buggy -- especially in Ubuntu 9.04 -- that impaired many users with stability issues, performance problems, and other headaches. Most of the regressions from overhauling the Linux driver stack have been resolved, but where is the driver stack at now? The Intel stack in Ubuntu 9.10 is performing rather well, but where it's more important is its status within Fedora as more of the bleeding-edge graphics packages are pulled into this release that often don't make it into other distributions until months later when they roll out their next releases. To see where the Intel Linux graphics are at in Fedora 12, we ran the same set of benchmarks in the Fedora 10, 11, and 12 releases with an Intel G43 IGP.

X Server 1.7.2 is scheduled to be released a week from Friday, so in preparations for that, Peter Hutterer has just pushed out the second release candidate for this minor point release. X Server 1.7.2 RC2 is made up of 15 fixes (mostly for XQuartz) since the RC1 release that arrived earlier this month. There's nothing real exciting in this release beyond addressing bugs as most developers are now focused on X Server 1.8, which will be released in March...
