New in ATI/AMD fglrx 8.32.5 (CATALYST 6.12) is some support for X.org 7.2 and Radeon X1950 official support. There is also a great deal of bug fixing in this release @ https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/linux_8.32.5.html

Phoronix Article

With the release of X11R72, the new ATI fglrx drivers now support X.Org 7.2. But what else is new with these display drivers? At Phoronix, we have once again examined these latest Linux drivers, and with today's public release we have all of the details to share.

As has been the case for some time now, between driver releases we have not seen any noticeable performance gains or losses. In our selected benchmarks the frame-rate remained virtually the same between the 8.31.5 and 8.32.5 display drivers. While for the most part this release was not very exciting, it had appended (partial) support for X.Org 7.2 and support for the Radeon X1950 family. There were also a slew of bugs that were fixed in this release. While we will save all of the details for our ATI AYiR 2006 article due out later this month, 2006 was the best year yet when it comes to the Linux fglrx display drivers and 2007 will also have some very exciting things in store.

Just a small note on an inconsitency in the articel and benchmarks. The benchmarks claim version 8.32.2 and the rest of the article states 8.32.5.

From Page 2:

Note: For our testing we had used the internal 8.32.2 display drivers, which are virtually identical to today's 8.32.5 driver package.

Seems like the memory allocation bug still has not been fixed. From the log:

Video on tv-out still cropping under Xv overlay. With TexturedVideo enabled, cropping is gone but video is slower and sharpness, colors, contrast and blacks not so good. Also a big green line at the top. All these disappear with Xv and TexturedVideo disabled.

I installed them but they fail to install control panel and when I went looking for it after a --keep, they were nowhere to be found. Anyone tried these and gotten the control panel installed?

Michael

Did you use the graphical installer or buildpkg? What distribution are you using?

Fragadelic

Graphical and it is an Ubuntu Edgy derivative called Linux Mint.

The installer doesn't recognize the Xorg version either but it installs and 3d works fine. I have the fgl_glxgears and fglxrinfo and the gamma one but no control panel.

Here is the output in the terminal window from running the installer:

Running it with --buildpkg Ubuntu/6.10 fixed it all.

Hi all,

I am reading for many days now about fglrx and all the ATI stuff on Linux. I am just about to give up.

Everything seems ok but, of course, it is not.

I am from those who have the DRI impossible to enable. Here are the classics error messages I got:

For sure I could live without opengl, but it is now a question of honour to make it work.

Sure you understand.

What happens if you make your xorg.conf really simple? Like here http://www.phoronix.com/redblog/downloads/xorg-fc6-sample.conf

Are you trying the 8.32.5 drivers?

Did the drivers work with any other distribution?

cyberfish

Well yes, it is the 8.32.5 drivers on a FC6 system. I can't try on another distribution.

With the xorg.conf you gave me, I got a black screen when system should be starting X server (no input signal in LCD display, i.e. display was in standby mode) and the HDD was not loading anything. The num lock key was working and the mouse too but nothing else. I tried to Ctrl+Alt+Backspace and Ctrl+Alt+Suppr but nothing happened. I had to hard reset.

I just added lines about HorizSync, VertRefresh, AGPMode and AGP Size and I got a proper boot but at improper HorizSync and VertRefresh (??!).

Still no DRI enabled.

Does your Xorg.0.log show any errors (EE) not warnings?

Had you tried using the open-source Radeon drivers?

cyberfish
12-17-2006, 11:11 AM
The command
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep WW && cat var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE
only send back warnings. No error.

The radeon driver does not work. My card is still unsupported by the radeon driver so it is "normal" that it does not work.

cyberfish

well, to be precise. The radeon driver work the same way the fglrx driver works.

no dri support and 250 fps approx to the glxgears.

The ATI Radeon 9600 should be supported by the open-source Radeon driver... Who/what says it isn't supported? Edit: nevermind, didn't see your second post.

Edit: Have you tried using Livna RPMs for the fglrx drivers? livna.org

Fragadelic

well, to be precise. The radeon driver work the same way the fglrx driver works.

no dri support and 250 fps approx to the glxgears.

What motherboard?

If it is nforce3 or nforce4 based it will not work since the agp driver does not work properly. Nothing wrong with the card. A via or sis based motherboard should work though. I had the same issue with my sempron system and only nvidia would work since they also provided a driver workaround for the agp stuff.

cyberfish
12-17-2006, 01:46 PM
Michael, it's the same with the livna driver.

Well Fragadelic, I'm afraid you found the trick...

it's an asus k8n with nforce chipset. Are you sure the problem comes from here ? But tell me why do I bought an ATI card with a nvidia chipset ?!

Fragadelic
12-17-2006, 02:28 PM
Yes. That is the exact same board I have. Should get fixed eventually in newer kernels though but nothing out right now works AFAIK.

I have a 6600gt in that PC and this PC is a P4 524 (EM64T) 3.06G on an MSI PM8M3-VH motherboard wiht an X700 Pro video card.

Via and Sis chipsets are better supported in Linux.

What you could try is the nforce drivers from nvidia but you will have to compile them yourself. They might work although I'm not sure if they include the agp driver or not.

Not a chipset problem or video card problem. Nvidia has not given enough info to the kernel devs.

What reportedly works is to boot into windows and run a 3d app. Then reboot to linux and the agp should work and you should have dri and 3d. If you dual boot with windows this will work for you but if you only use linux, then you can either get an nvidia vard or an sis or via based mobo. mobo would be cheaper IMHO or just wait until the kernel driver works properly with it in a couple of months or so hopefully.
.

Thank you very much for your help (Michael and Fragadelic). I will give a try to the nforce3 drivers and maybe buy a cheap nvidia graphic card if I want to have fun with 3d.

For sure I don't have any Window OS on my computer.

Bye !

The command
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep WW && cat var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE
only send back warnings. No error.

The radeon driver does not work. My card is still unsupported by the radeon driver so it is "normal" that it does not work.

Is this just a typo in your command there? There is a / missing on the right part so it would not show errors anyway:

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE

In any event, if no direct rendering, first step is to find out whether fglrx loads with it, or not. The log will tell that. Should say something like
(II) fglrx(0): Using XFree86 Acceleration Architecture (XAA)
Screen to screen bit blits
Solid filled rectangles
8x8 mono pattern filled rectangles
Solid Lines
Dashed Lines
Offscreen Pixmaps
Setting up tile and stipple cache:
30 128x128 slots
(II) fglrx(0): Acceleration enabled
(WW) fglrx(0): Option "VendorName" is not used
(WW) fglrx(0): Option "ModelName" is not used
(II) fglrx(0): X context handle = 0x1
(II) fglrx(0): [DRI] installation complete
(II) fglrx(0): Direct rendering enabled
(==) fglrx(0): Using hardware cursor
(II) fglrx(0): Interrupt handler installed at IRQ 169.
(II) fglrx(0): Exposed events to the /proc interface

Toward the end.

If DRI loads but does not work, then the problem is usually minor. I can think of two possibilities: either Selinux disallows some memory allocation thing, in which case trying to use the driver (such as when trying glxinfo or glxgears) results in a message in /var/log/messages like this:

Dec 13 16:18:55 localhost kernel: audit(1166051935.047:4): avc: denied { execmod } for pid=3124 comm="fgl_glxgears" name="fglrx_dri.so" dev=dm-0 ino=41653383 scontext=user_u:system_r:unconfined_t:s0 tcontext=user_u:object_r:lib_t:s0 tclass=file

This is really a bug in fglrx, but the work-around is easy, just allow execmod for fglrx_dri.so. I don't remember the precise command but a search will tell.

Finally there is a possibility that there are conflicting libraries that get loaded. To find out, there are ways to run things such as glxgears or fgl_glxinfo etc. in debug/verbose mode, which will tell you. Again, I don't quite recall the specifics, but a search will tell you.

Negative, you will need to wait until next year.

Really, will GLX_EXT_tfp be finally in fglrx in 8.33 (January 07)?

Ohhh I can't wait for it ... :(
NVidia beats ATI again...

There is an Arch Linux Wiki about this:

http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI_Radeon_&_Kernel_2.6

Under the Hardware Conflicts section you will find info on the nforce3 issue.

And the kernel bug report:

http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6350

Still present in 2.6.19.

I am going to download this in the weekend and I hope to God or any religious power that this build fixes my problem.

I haven't been up to recompiling kernels yet, had a number of health-related issues.

Can you post your xorg.conf?

Did the X1600 work with past releases?

I've been having the same problem as leigh, corruption on the top of the screen with both fgl_glxgears & video (screenshots below).

http://img451.imageshack.us/img451/7164/corrupt1wu5.th.png (http://img451.imageshack.us/my.php?image=corrupt1wu5.png)

http://img372.imageshack.us/img372/6923/corrupt3sn3.th.png (http://img372.imageshack.us/my.php?image=corrupt3sn3.png)

However, no such problems with glxgears (but notice the low FPS):

I can't go back to the 8.28 driver as I've upgraded to an X1950 pro (AGP) from a 9600XT.

I could take the redundant screen section out, though I can't see that making any difference as the 9600XT had none of these problems with the same driver & kernel config. Any clue? Or is it just a bug?

Distro is Gentoo, kernel 2.6.18-r6, xorg 7.1.

Looks to be a bug with fglrx.

Thanks Michael, I'll try that straight away, report back soon.

edit: 8.28.8 won't build on gentoo, 8.30.3 builds but doesn't work at all. Any more suggestions or will I just have to wait for the next release?

edit2: Just found this (http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=159404) on the gentoo bugzilla, looks like I'll have to wait.

Is it possible to get hold of the 8.32.1 beta release?

Hey guys, about the 8.32.05 Drivers, I installed FC6 yesterday, with all developments tools, and basically everything other than Xen and Visualization stuff, etc etc.

So. I tried the guides there were in the site, but none worked! first off, I don't have a lib64 folder, but I stilled linked it with the qt-3.3/lib, which worked fine.

Whenever I use the command aticonfig --initial --input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf
My XServer can't start, and I have to resort back to restoring my original. I use an ATi Radeon X700Pro. When I tried to the --buildpkg Fedora/FC6, it only gave me 4 RPMs, not five, which maybe my primary problem. The one it did not give me was: ATI-fglrx-IA32-libs-8.32.5-1.fc6.x86_64.rpm

Here is my current Xorg.conf File. (Right after I restored it)

Are you running x86_64 Linux? If not, you should only have four RPMs for i386 Linux.

What does your Xorg.0.log show in the way of errors?

Hey, wow that was a fast response!
Anyways, no I'm not using a 64-Bit processor, so I guess the 4 RPM thing is ok, as for my Xorg.0.log, here you are:

(II) fglrx(0): Composite extension enabled, disabling direct rendering
(WW) fglrx(0): ***********************************************
(WW) fglrx(0): * DRI initialization failed! *
(WW) fglrx(0): * (maybe driver kernel module missing or bad) *
(WW) fglrx(0): * 2D acceleraton available (MMIO) *
(WW) fglrx(0): * no 3D acceleration available *
(WW) fglrx(0): ********************************************* *

(That is the only error I can find.)

Hmm, it seemed like it's working now, I'm still using the Xorg I posted before, not the aticonfig one. I restarted and it worked, so horray?

Ok, so as soon as my video card drivers started working, my sound died. In the same reboot. Could it be my Xorg.conf?

Your sound shouldn't be related to your audio. Check alsamixer

I have an X1300 and I can't get these new drivers to work at all. I only have kdm as a window manager, so I can't test with anything minimalistic, but it shouldn't make a difference, should it? When I start X, KDE's loader comes up, and halts before the end. The mouse is live, but what little has loaded of the desktop is dead. I can't switch to console, keyboard is also dead. All I can do is power off. No errors in Xorg.log or dmesg either.

8.31.5 works just fine though.

This is what I get when I try to open alsamixer:
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory

I'm looking around atm for what could have caused this.

Ref my post on the previous page, the gentoo devs have hard masked these drivers as they don't work with X1000 series cards. So I would imagine that is the case with all distros.

The fglrx 8.32.5 display driver themselves have absolutely no compatibility problems with the X1000 series. If anything, it is likely an issue with the Gentoo packaging scripts specifically.

I hadn't considered that, so just I tried using the ATI installer directly. It didn't solve the problems I was having although it installed the driver successfully, but it did give me an interesting error message on starting the installer:

X Server: Unknown X Window

Is that relating to the xorg version or the X display currently running? The installer was also looking for a couple of files in the temporary fglrx-install directory which weren't there:

cp: cannot stat `x710_64a/usr/X11R6/bin/*': No such file or directory
find: install/usr/bin/fireglcontrolpanel: No such file or directory

The ATI graphical installer is rather problematic at this time with newer distributions and wouldn't be recommended for use at this time. However, the --buildpkg command is handy except there are no bundled Gentoo packaging scripts in the official driver.

Your best bet would probably be to contact the maintainer of the Gentoo ATI packages.

You're one of the first people I have heard claiming the 8.32.5 driver is broken. I have used it dozens of times already on Fedora, and I know many have it working with Ubuntu, and I know SuSE is also working fine with these drivers.

I have an identiocatl problem as above...on a brand new Fedora 6 install.
The ATI installer fails to detect what version of X I have...

I tried generating the rpm-s but I got another error:
RPM build errors:
File not found: /tmp/ATI-fglrx-8.32.5-1-7606-root/tmp/ATI-fglrx-8.32.5-1.fc6-root-root/usr/bin/fireglcontrolpanel

Any idea how to fix it?

You need to build the packages like so and install them after:

ati-driver-installer-8.32.5-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Fedora/FC6

I've added this section in xorg.conf, as per some other forum reccomendations..to disable AIGLX:

Section "ServerFlags"
Option "AIGLX" "off"
EndSection

..and now there are NO errors in the log file..but still the MESA driver is used. Damn it!

OK..I fixed the problem.
According to another guy from this forum:
"The corresponding libGL.so.1.2 from this package will be installed in /usr/lib/ati-fglrx/ . Of course, the existing ligGL.so.1.2 provided by MESA, which resides in /usr/lib, will be found in the path first. So rename /usr/lib/libGL.so.1.2 to /usr/lib/ligGL.so.1.2.MESA and copy /usr/lib/ati-fglrx/ligGL.so.1.2 to /usr/lib. It did the trick. REBOOT!"

So in the end it was a library that was found first..and it was the wrong one.

... It doesn't seem to work. The DRI system doesn't init because /dev/dri is empty. This is a symptom of the kernel fglrx module not being loaded. It doesn't load because the compile fails. It gives the errors at the bottom of this post.

If you define FGL_USE_SCT in firegl_public.c the module does compile, although it won't load.

Anyone else seeing this? or even better have a fix other than wait for the next ati release. And with my new X1600 I can't get non-ati accelerate support, unlike with my old 9600.

It's likely due to using the Linux 2.6.20 kernel. I'll see if I can recall a patch for the Linux 2.6.20 for the fglrx 8.32.5 driver.

You're one of the first people I have heard claiming the 8.32.5 driver is broken. I have used it dozens of times already on Fedora, and I know many have it working with Ubuntu, and I know SuSE is also working fine with these drivers.

I have had problems with this driver version with my X1600 on every distro I have cared to try it with (Debian, Ubuntu, Knoppix, Suse , Fedora, Mandrake and so on) It would seem that the ati driver is broken for certain cards only.:(
I hope the next one is better for me:cool:
